What Is The Autoimmune Diseases Research Plan?

The Autoimmune Diseases Research Plan (ADRP) is a 10-year plan designed to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of autoimmune diseases. The plan was commissioned by Congress in 2008 and revised in 2014. It focuses on 6 key goals

understand the prevalence of autoimmune disease; identify risk factors for developing autoimmune disease; establish interventions to prevent or delay onset of disease; develop better diagnostic tests for early detection; develop improved therapies that address underlying causes of autoimmune disorders; and eventually find cures for these conditions.

The ADRP recommends high priority research studies that focus on specific elements within these six goals in order to better understand the root causes of autoimmunity and develop more effective treatments. Additionally, the plan calls for increased collaboration among all stakeholders such as researchers, clinicians, public health experts, patients and their families so that efforts are better coordinated towards achieving these objectives.

How Does ADRP Help Those Affected By Autoimmunity?

The purpose of the ADRP is to support research projects that will reduce suffering from autoimmunity by improving prevention efforts through better understanding of risk factors for developing the disease; increasing early detection with more accurate diagnostic tests; providing improved therapies that address underlying causes or replace lost bodily functions caused by autoimmune disease; and eventually finding cures by researching new treatment possibilities such as gene therapy or stem cell transplants. Ultimately, these efforts will improve quality of life for those affected by autoimmunity as well as reduce costs associated with treating these conditions long-term.

Additionally, the ADRP also provides funding opportunities for researchers studying various aspects of autoimmunity including identifying biomarkers for diagnosis; understanding mechanisms behind development of these disease states; examining various drug targets such generating monoclonal antibodies or exploring genetic engineering strategies like CRISPR/Cas9 technology; assessing efficacy of current treatments such as biologics or small molecules drugs like Glucocorticoids among many others. This provides additional financial resources to support important research initiatives related to autoimmunity that would otherwise not be possible due to lack funding from other sources.
