What does DDD mean in PHARMACY

Drug Design and Discovery (DDD) is the process of creating novel drugs or modifying existing drugs for therapeutic use. This process involves an understanding of molecular structure, drug action, pharmacokinetics, metabolism and other related topics.

One of the most common techniques used in DDD is computer-aided drug design (CADD). This technique uses computational methods to analyze a variety of parameters such as solubility, stability, pharmacokinetics and more for potential drugs. Other techniques used in this field include high throughput screening (HTS), homology modeling, molecular dynamics simulations and X-ray crystallography.

Scientists prioritize which drugs to work on according to the type of disease they are trying to treat. Many times this involves looking at epidemiological data or current treatments available and seeing which diseases have the greatest effect on people's lives worldwide. Once a disease has been identified as being a high priority product development target then researchers can begin the process of designing targeted drugs that may be effective against it.

Any type of disease can potentially be treated using DDD depending on how well scientists understand the underlying cause of it at a molecular level. Diseases ranging from cancer to viral infections have been studied in depth with potential drugs designed targeting each one of them separately.

During the Drug Design & Discovery process, potential new treatments are developed based on clinical data gathered from population studies conducted by experts in the field. Once a potential treatment has been deemed suitable for clinical trials based on its safety profile and efficacy profile it will then enter pre-clinical testing before entering into human clinical trials where its effectiveness can be tested for real world applications.
