A Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) is a senior civilian employee of the United States Department of Defense who supports the civilian leadership at the highest levels in management,program and policy for the United States Department of Defense. This position works with congressional staffers, White House officials, and other executive branch officials to ensure that defense policies are in line with Congressional guidance and political objectives.

The primary responsibility for a DASD is to provide professional advice to the senior leadership on matters relating to military strategy and operations, force posture, weapon acquisitions, readiness oversight and budgets. Additionally, DASDs may manage major programs; coordinate international programs; contribute to strategic planning; collaborate with service components; lead projects and initiatives; participate in development and implementation of regulations; serve as Acting Assistant Secretary when needed; liaison between government agencies; conduct research activities, studies, analyses and evaluations related to current issues or long-term plans.
