History

The Civic Youth Orchestra was founded in Houston, TX in 1992 as a pilot program designed to help young musicians from diverse backgrounds gain access to quality musical education and performance experiences. It was initially sponsored by The Texas Music Project (TXMP), an affiliate of the Interlochen Center for the Arts Summer Camp at Interlochen, Michigan. Since then, CYO has grown exponentially over the years, and currently serves more than 1,500 students throughout the state of Texas.

Goal & Activities

The primary goal of CYO is to introduce young people to the exciting world of classical music through high-quality private instruction and public performances. CYO works with local school districts and community organizations to provide weekly private lessons taught by professional musicians. Members of CYO also have many unique performance opportunities throughout the year such as concerts in large venues or participating in international tours around the world. CYO helps cultivate appreciation for symphonic music among its members through guidance from experienced educators who strive to create meaningful learning experiences for all students involved. In addition to individual lessons and performances, CYO has group meetings which include activities that promote socialization between members such as playing games or discussing repertoire pieces they are working on.
