What does CTCR mean in RESEARCH

CTCR employs a variety of methods depending on the context. We draw from qualitative methods such as interviews, surveys, roundtables, focus groups, archival research; quantitative methods such as statistical analysis; and creative practices such as art making or performance.

By combining traditional research methods with creative practice in Critical Theory and Creative Research we seek to generate greater insight into complex questions by providing more comprehensive ways of understanding social phenomena. This interdisciplinary approach helps us better interrogate normative structures by creating diverse forms of knowledge grounded in lived experience.

CTCR has something to offer researchers across disciplines who may be seeking new ways of approaching their work with creativity or new insights into complex questions. It can also benefit organizations striving to create more equitable outcomes through meaningful engagement with stakeholders’ needs and experiences.

We view ‘creative practice’ broadly as any activity that involves organic problem solving and works towards a tangible outcome – this could include visual art, music production, writing/storytelling/poetry, etc., but also includes activities traditionally associated with research such as fieldwork or coding data.

Critical theorists like Michel Foucault, Max Horkheimer & Theodor Adorno; prominent thinkers working at the intersection between theory & creativity like bell hooks; feminist theorists like Gloria Anzaldúa & Donna Haraway; critical race theorists like Richard Delgado – all have made important contributions to this field. Additionally there are many modern writers producing innovative work that draws from this tradition today including Windy Chien & adrienne maree brown among others.

Digital technologies are playing an increasingly important role in how we engage with our research subjects which is why many practitioners are exploring how technology might change how we understand our world today – incorporating media-based analysis or web-based survey tools for example. These resources can give us a more nuanced view of complicated phenomena while also allowing us to scale up our reach quickly while keeping costs low.

When beginning a project within this framework it is important for researchers to first identify what they would like to know before they select an appropriate method for gathering that information (as discussed earlier). They should also consider what type of outcome they hope to achieve so that their project design can keep these goals in mind throughout the process. Additionally they should remember that engaging stakeholders in meaningful ways helps ensure their data reflects reality more accurately
