What does CSWA mean in CANADIAN

The CSWA is a non-profit professional association dedicated to providing resources, mentorship, and visibility for science communicators in Canada. Our members include journalists, authors, editors, film producers, bloggers, podcasters and university professors who all share an interest in promoting the understanding of science through communication.

There are several benefits to joining CSWA! These include access to a widespread network of contacts in the field of science communication; discounted rates for accessing professional development courses; access to online resources such as monthly newsletters and magazine archives; opportunities for collaboration with other science communicators; and more.

To become a member of the CSWA you must first complete an application form which can be found on our website. The application requires some basic information about yourself along with samples of your work or evidence of your qualifications. Applications are reviewed by our board members before they are approved.

Yes! Every year we host a variety of events and conferences that bring together leading science communicators from across Canada. These events provide a great opportunity to connect with others in the field, develop your skills and find out about current trends in science communication.

No – membership is open to anyone over 18 regardless of age who has an interest in communicating science effectively. We do however encourage younger people to get involved by attending our events and taking part in our various initiatives such as our student mentorship program.

While having some experience or qualifications related to scientific writing is always beneficial, it is not necessary to be accepted into CSWA membership. Those wishing to join will need evidence that they are actively engaged in science writing (eg published articles) but no particular qualifications or certifications are required.
