What Does CSNT Mean?

CSNT stands for "Complete Sciatic Nerve Transection". This procedure involves the cutting or severing of the sciatic nerve in order to stop any transmission of pain signals from reaching the brain. The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back down your legs and provides feeling to your lower body. During a CSNT procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in the area of skin above the sciatic nerve and cut through the tissue, severing the nerve.

When Is It Used?

The primary use of CSNT is as a last resort treatment option for certain debilitating chronic pain conditions that do not respond to other treatments. It is rarely used due to its high risks and complications, however when medications and other treatments have been found unsuccessful, then a CSNT may be recommended if further damage can be prevented by cutting off transmission between the affected area and brain. This type of surgery has also been used in cases where cancer cells have spread into or near the sciatic nerve causing intense pain.

What Are The Risks?

The most serious risk associated with a CSNT procedure is permanent numbing or paralysis of the leg below where the nerve was transected (cut). Other risks include excessive bleeding, infection, delayed healing and pain at the site of incision (incisional pain). Post-operative care following a CSNT procedure needs to be carefully monitored since even minor injuries in this area can cause long term loss of sensation or movement.
