What does CRU mean in HOSPITALS

The CRU provides specialized medical and therapeutic services to promote the recovery or rehabilitation of patients. Services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, counseling, recreational therapy and more.

Individuals who have experienced acute illnesses or injuries such as stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury (SCI), multiple trauma, orthopedic surgery, amputation, neurological conditions and other debilitating diseases may be eligible for treatment in a CRU.

A typical stay at a CRU lasts around 10-14 days depending on individual needs and progress. It may be longer for greater complexity of needs or shorter when goals are met ahead of schedule.

The goal of the CRU team is to assist each individual in regaining independence with activities of daily living (ADLs). This includes restoring maximum functioning such as mobility, communication and cognitive abilities so that one can return to work or school if possible. Other benefits include an interdisciplinary team approach tailored to meet each patient's unique needs as well as providing emotional support during their entire rehabilitation journey.

At most hospitals that provide comprehensive rehabilitation services, family members are invited to be part of the care team and encouraged to visit frequently. They receive educational material from clinicians about disease processes, therapies and progress made by their loved one during visits. Most hospitals also feature patient/family education programs about patient rights and roles in health management decisions.
