What Is CRDD?

Cutaneous Rosai Dorfman Disease (CRDD) is a rare disease that affects both the lymph nodes and skin. It was first documented by Dr. Josef Pavátek in 1974 and it was named after two other doctors - Drs. Rosai and Dorfman - who did extensive research on this disorder. When affected with CRDD, individuals will experience swollen, painless lymph nodes, which can be located anywhere in the body but are most often found in the neck or armpit area. Additionally, the condition may cause reddish-brown patches on the skin that are itchy or uncomfortable when touched. While most people with CRDD have no major health issues related to their condition, some may experience nausea, fever or fatigue along with their symptoms.

Diagnosis & Treatment

In order to properly diagnose CRDD, doctors must perform physical exams as well as biopsies of any suspiciously enlarged lymph nodes or areas of discoloration on the skin. If an individual has been diagnosed with this rare disorder, there are a variety of treatment options available to provide some level of symptom relief and manage flare-ups when they occur. Some medications such as corticosteroids have been known to reduce swelling in affected areas and prevent further tissue damage from occurring within them. Antihistamines can also help lessen itchiness associated with reddened patches of skin caused by CRDD. In more extreme cases where multiple organs become involved due to systemic involvement, chemotherapy may be prescribed as a form of treatment for this disorder.
