What does CRAP mean in OCEAN SCIENCE

The Coral Reef Assessment Program (CRAP) is a global initiative to improve the management of coral reefs and associated ecosystems. It seeks to increase awareness and knowledge of threats facing coral reefs, reduce human stressors, promote sustainable resource use, and foster collaboration among stakeholders, governments, scientists, and others.

The program involves stakeholders from all countries with access to coral reefs as well as experts from different fields including marine science, public policy, fisheries science, etc.

The objectives of CRAP are to raise awareness about threats facing coral reefs; reduce human-induced stressors; promote sustainable resource use; strengthen local governance systems for effective management; foster public-private partnerships; acquire evidence-based decision making; develop capacity building initiatives; document best practices in local communities; and encourage collaboration among stakeholders.

Through its initiatives such as improving water quality through sewage treatment facilities or reducing habitat destruction through replanting mangroves in coastal areas. Additionally by increasing awareness of these issues amongst people living in areas affected by them via educational programmes or media campaigns they promote a more responsible attitude towards nature preservation.
