Most Activity Directors have a minimum of a 2-year degree such as a Certified Recreational Therapist or Gerontology Specialist; however, some employers may hire those with only a high school diploma if they have relevant experience in planning and organizing recreational or social activities.

An Activity Director is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating activity programs that meet the leisure interests of elderly residents. They could also plan parties, organize field trips, lead exercises classes and create arts & crafts projects. In addition, they often help arrange spiritual services for residents as well as provide counseling to them when needed.

A main role of Activity Directors is to ensure that elderly residents stay engaged in their community and remain active both physically and mentally. Through planned activities they can provide meaningful experiences that promote self-expression through entertainment, culture and recreation while helping reduce symptoms related to aging such as depression or isolation.

Good organizational skills are essential since ADs coordinate not only events but also staff resources. Other important qualities include leadership, communication skills and compassion when dealing with elderly patients who may be vulnerable due to physical limitations or cognitive impairments. Additionally, they must demonstrate good judgement when creating individualized plans based on each resident's needs as well as ability levels.

In order to become an Activity Director you must complete at least a 2-year degree program related to gerontology or recreation therapy from an accredited school. You will also need to obtain licensure from your state health department if applicable and obtain CPR certification before you may begin working in this role. Additionally some employers may require further certifications such as National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
