What does AD mean in ATHLETICS

An Athletic Director's duties involve the overall administration of an athletic program. This includes budgeting, planning events, hiring and supervising coaches, dealing with any related legal matters and scheduling practices and games.

Athletic Directors are typically employed in educational settings like high schools and universities.

To become an Athletic Director, you will generally need at least a bachelor's degree in Physical Education or Sports Management as well as relevant work experience in coaching. In addition, there are some states which require candidates for this position to have specific teaching credentials or certifications related to physical education.

A successful Athletics Director should possess strong leadership abilities along with problem-solving skills necessary to deal with different issues that may arise. They must also possess strong communication skills as they will often be interacting with coaches, athletes, parents and other stakeholders within the sports community. In addition, they should have good organizational skills as well as knowledge of sports rules and regulations.

The amount of time it takes depends on the individual pathway chosen by the aspiring Athletics Director combined with their personal experience level. Generally speaking however earning a bachelor's degree can take up to 4 years while gaining relevant work experience can take several more years depending on the type or organization chosen by the applicant.
