What does CPCS mean in UNIVERSITIES

The Center for Peace and Conflict Studies (CPCS) at Wayne State University is committed to researching and teaching about social, economic, and political alternatives to violence. We are an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to studying peacebuilding practices and theories that address structural causes of violence in our society. We also offer a wide range of educational programs designed to foster dialogues between scholars, practitioners, activists, students, community members, and policy makers in order to promote peaceful resolution of conflict.

The CPCS conducts research on a variety of topics related to peacebuilding and conflict resolution. Our research focuses on themes such as justice reform, gender empowerment, development aid effectiveness, reconciliation efforts after mass violence or traumatic experiences, civil society engagement in peace processes, peacekeeping operations around the world, mediation efforts aimed at resolving long-standing divisions within societies or across borders, culture and communication initiatives designed to prevent violence or create understanding among warring parties.

While we embrace an interdisciplinary approach to understanding conflict and promoting peaceful resolutions thereto, our main focus is on examining ways in which social movements can be utilized as a way of transforming relationships within societies that have experienced prolonged conflict. We believe grassroots mobilization has tremendous potential for creating meaningful change in the lives of ordinary people who are affected by armed conflicts or structured injustices.
