History
The CPBL was created after the disbandment of the Taiwan Major League in 1987 as a way to revitalize and establish professional baseball as a mainstream sport within Taiwan. After several years of planning and negotiations, the CPBL finally launched on May 23, 1990 with five teams competing for the championship title. The initial four founding teams were the China Times Eagles, Mercuries Tigers, Wei Chuan Dragons, and Brother Elephants - all of which are still part of the CPBL today. However, due to economic depression during that time period, only three teams remained by 1993.
In 1997, the CPBL expanded to four teams when it welcomed back the former Wei Chuan Dragons under a new name, President Lions. Since then, further expansion has been taken off-table due to financial constraints so now that same four teams remain competing today: Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions (formerly President Lions), Fubon Guardians (formerly Mercuries Tigers), Chinatrust Brothers (formerly Brother Elephants) and Rakuten Monkeys (formerly China Times Eagles).
Popularity
The CPBL has enjoyed immense popularity among Taiwanese fans since its inception in 1990 and continues to attract large numbers of viewers each season. Attendance levels have consistently been higher than any other professional sport or entertainment event in Taiwan – an impressive feat given that basketball is also one of the most popular sports in Taiwan.
This can be attributed to several factors such as strong local team loyalties amongst fans or unique social activities like “Noise Barracks” held at each game where enthusiastic supporters produce loud chants or use drums to cheer their favorite team on to victory!
