What does CNLA mean in NURSING

The role of a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is to unite evidence-based practice, team-based care delivery, interdisciplinary collaboration, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance the outcomes for patients. The CNL actively functions as a leader for clinical systems change by empowering interprofessional teams.

Core competencies for the CNL include: communication and collaboration; quality improvement; systems thinking; technology; safety; ethical decision-making; informatics; data analysis; population health management; evidence based practice; project management; coaching/mentoring; financial management.

Organizations such as hospitals, healthcare systems, long-term care facilities, home health agencies, specialty practices, community health centers and research companies may recognize certification from the CNLA.

In addition to offering Certified Clinical Nurse Leader (CCNL) certification, the CNLA also offers Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing Leadership (CPNO). This certification focuses on advanced level leadership roles in nurse administration and education within practice settings. It emphasizes development of advanced skills applicable across all levels of organizational responsibility including direct patient care pathways and innovative processes for leading at both macro and micro levels.

To be eligible for CCNL or CPNO certifications candidates must have a current license as a Registered Nurse in at least one state or country jurisdiction and must have earned graduate degree with focus on nursing leadership from an accredited college or university program approved by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing prior to application submission deadline.
