What does CMSS mean in ACADEMIC & SCIENCE

Coastal and Marine System Science (CMSS) focuses on the understanding of complex physical, chemical, biological and geological processes in coastal regions, estuaries, bays and seas. CMSS also studies the interactions between the environment, marine life and humans that live in coastal areas.

Climate change can cause sea levels to rise due to melting glaciers and thermal expansion of sea water, which changes the shape of ocean basins and affects currents. It also increases temperatures within oceans leading to changes in species distributions and abundance as well as increasing ocean acidity which has impacts on organisms with shells such as corals.

Humans threaten marine systems through activities such as overfishing, pollution resulting from runoff from land-based sources or discharge from ships, illegal hunting of species threatened by extinction, destruction or modification of habitats due to human development (e.g., dredging). These activities reduce biodiversity and disrupt natural cycles within ecosystems leading to long-term effects that ultimately affect human populations living in coastal areas directly dependent on these resources for their livelihoods.
