What does CMFN mean in FORESTRY

The Canadian Model Forest Network is a non-profit organization made up of 16 model forests across Canada. The network works to foster sustainable forest management by developing tools, resources, and partnerships to promote research and knowledge exchange between its members. Through its initiatives, it also aims to create healthy forests that provide economic, social, and environmental benefits for communities in Canada.

The Canadian Model Forest Network’s primary goal is to develop models of sustainable forest management for national and international application. To achieve this, it works with its member forests and other stakeholders to develop strategies that promote research, knowledge exchange, capacity building initiatives, community engagement, partnerships with government agencies and private sector organizations. It also promotes multi-stakeholder dialogue as well as collaborative grassroots approaches that strive for shared decision-making in managing forests.

In order to join the Canadian Model Forest Network you must be nominated by an existing member forest. Each model forest has specific criteria for applicants that must be met in order for them to be considered for membership in the network. Prospective members should contact their local model forest to learn more about how they can become involved.

The activities undertaken by the Canadian Model Forest Network include research into forestry issues such as biodiversity conservation, silviculture practices, climate change adaptation measures, community engagement initiatives, socio-economic development projects and more. Additionally, members participate in workshops and conferences related to forestry sustainability topics as well as multi-stakeholder dialogues regarding important issues facing forests today.

Secondly you could also volunteer your time at one of our partner organizations or volunteer events hosted by any one of our member model forests – both activities provide invaluable help in supporting our work towards fostering sustainable forestry practices across Canada. Finally you can spread awareness about CMFN’s mission through your own networks or even get involved with policy advocacy work if you would like to make a larger impact on forestry sustainability in Canada.
