What does CLUP mean?

CLUP stands for Community Land Use Planning. It is a process that local and regional governments use to anticipate land use demand, assess current and future land availability, and ensure the efficient management of resources. The goal of CLUP is to promote smart growth and sustainability by anticipating population growth, managing development pressures, preserving open spaces, preserving agricultural lands, protecting natural areas, creating walkable communities, providing affordable housing options, and other considerations related to local needs.

What is involved in CLUP?

In order to create a successful Community Land Use Plan (CLUP), local governments must engage with stakeholders from all sectors of the community – residents; business owners; local municipal officials; faith-based organizations; schools; environmental groups; public safety staff; developers/homebuilders; planners/engineers; advocacy groups; transportation personnel; health agencies/organizations; service providers – as well as others who may have an interest in or impact on long-term development decisions. Through these collaborations during a comprehensive planning process involving public hearings and/or workshops held jointly with community members or separately within individual groups if desired—local governments can gain insight into interests that should be considered when developing strategies for addressing changes in land uses due to population growth or decline.
