What Does CLT Mean?

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an approach to teaching foreign languages that places emphasis on developing communicative competence. CLT focuses on helping learners use target language soundly and accurately through meaningful context, interaction between native and non-native speakers, as well as authentic materials such as newspapers, radio broadcasts, television programs, websites, etc. By providing students with a variety of real-life contexts that they could encounter daily, teachers can foster their communicative ability by using various activities such as role plays, interviews, debates or simulations. Additionally, this method emphasizes the natural “back-and-forth” process of negotiation which occurs while negotiating meaning during communication between two partners.

How Is CLT Applied?

CLT is applied mainly through conversation activities which require students to engage in meaningful dialogues with each other as well as other native speakers. These activities are designed not only for learners to practice vocabulary and grammar but also for them to understand different accents spoken by native speakers in their target language and gain confidence when conversing using their newly acquired knowledge and skills. Other aspects of communicative teaching include providing feedback from teachers focused on linguistic accuracy instead of simply correcting errors repeatedly; allowing more time for student talk rather than teacher talk; speaking slowly with clear pronunciation; asking questions which stimulate critical thinking; demonstrating cultural understanding; and creating lively classroom environment filled with invitees and entertaining activities.
