Carolina Journalism Institute (CJI) is an award-winning summer program for college, high school and middle school student journalists. CJI offers hands-on experience covering South Carolina communities during one- and two-week intensives at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

What age group can attend CJI programs?

CJI serves high school, middle school and college students with a range of programming options. High school students can attend for either 1 or 2 weeks; College Students and Multiplatform participants spend 2 weeks with us; and Middle School Students spend 1 week with us.

Who can apply to the CJI programs?

Everyone who meets the eligibility requirements listed on our website is welcome to apply. All applicants must have completed their freshman year of high school prior to attending our program.

Does CJI provide housing lodging for participants?

Housing lodgings are provided depending on availability. Our housing facility is usually a dormitory located on the University of South Carolina's campus in Columbia, South Carolina.

Do I need any special equipment to participate in the Institute?

Participants need to bring their own laptop computers with current operating systems (Windows 7 or above) as well as Adobe Creative Cloud software including Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Audition etc., if available. We also recommend that participants bring along digital cameras and audio recorders if they have them available.

Is transportation provided for participants by CJI?

No, we do not provide transportations for participants attending our programs. However, we do offer a shuttling service from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (Charlotte, NC) upon request only after your acceptance into the program has been confirmed.

Is lunch provided at the Institute?

Yes! Both lunch and snack are provided to participants throughout their stay at the Institute which will be served in our designated dining area between classes each day.

Are scholarships available to attend CJI programming?

Yes! We offer scholarships both on a need-based and merit based basis to qualified students who wish to participate in our Institute programming but have difficulty paying full tuition fees due to financial limitations or other reasons.

How many instructors are typically present during courses offered through CJI?

Each course is staffed by one instructor plus several assistants who are professional media makers in their respective fields such as photography, videography, sound engineering etc.,. Instructors typically have backgrounds in teaching journalism or media production as well significant professional experience working in their field.
