What Is CIP?

CIP stands for Cataloging in Publication, which is a program that provides standardized bibliographic information for books shortly before they are published. It was developed by the Library of Congress (LOC) to make the process of accessing information about books easier and faster. When a publisher submits an application to join the CIP program, they provide detailed information about their upcoming titles including title, author, publisher name, ISBN number, summary of content, subject classification categories etc. This information is then added to the LOC's catalogue cards and printed on its catalogues so that libraries can quickly and easily access all necessary details about a book before purchasing it.
