The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) began as an alliance among seven historically Black colleges or universities back in 1912. Its founding members included Shaw University, Lincoln University, Howard University, Storer College, Hampton Institute, Virginia Union University and Virginia Seminary and College (now known as Virginia State University). Since its inception over 100 years ago, the conference has grown from seven members to include over 50 active member institutions today. From its humble beginnings on an old dirt road in North Carolina and its subsequent development into a thriving athletic association with national recognition, the CIAA has come a long way since 1912.
