What does CHN mean in NURSING

A CHN evaluates, assesses, treats and monitors patients with end-stage renal disease who are receiving dialysis treatments. They use state of the art equipment to provide safe and effective care while educating and counseling the patient on lifestyle and health management strategies.

In order to become a CHN, one must have an Associate's degree in nursing or higher level of education along with at least two years of experience as a nurse working in either nephrology or dialysis units. Additional certifications may also be necessary depending on their specialty area.

To become certified as a CHN, an individual must pass an examination administered by the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT). This exam consists of questions regarding common renal diseases, hemodialysis techniques, medications used in renal care, infection control practices, medical legal issues specific to renal care, nutrition therapy for chronic kidney diseases, and more.

As part of their role as a Certified Hemodialysis Nurse (CHN), they will monitor vital signs during dialysis treatments and make sure that everything is functioning properly. They will also teach patients about self-care techniques such as diet modification and medication management; in addition to providing emotional support throughout the process. The CHN will often consult with other healthcare professionals when necessary including physicians and social workers in order to ensure that all aspects of patient care are being addressed appropriately.

As a Certified Hemodialysis Nurse (CHN) you can expect to work in hospitals, clinics or other healthcare settings where patients receive dialysis treatments. You may also be required to travel if needed to provide assistance at multiple facilities within your geographic area. Working with this population requires excellent communication skills along with maintaining safety protocol for medical procedures.
