History

The American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) was founded in 1984 by a group of leading osteopathic surgeons devoted to furthering the profession’s knowledge about surgical science. At that time, there was limited access to quality continuing medical education for practicing ostheopaths. To address this need, ACOS developed certification programs and organized CME courses focused on relevant topics such as operative techniques, anesthesia and pharmacology, trauma management and diagnostic imaging. Today ACOS has grown to include more than 10,000 members worldwide and offers an extensive Continuing Medical Education program for osteopathic surgeons from every area or expertise throughout the country.

Goals

The primary goal of the ACOS is to represent its members with a common voice in advocacy and policy-making efforts related to healthcare reform initiatives. In addition, ACOS works closely with other organizations representing allied health professionals including general practitioners (GPs), nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), certified nurse midwives (CNMs) and radiographers to develop educational opportunities that foster collaboration among all disciplines. Furthermore, ACOs strives to stay abreast on current issues impacting the field by providing updates on legislative initiatives derived from technical data sources such as The National Library Of Medicine (NLM). As such they are able share important information with their members quickly.

Philosophy

The guiding principles behind ACOS are rooted in three core beliefs: respect for individual dignity; commitment to excellence; and responsibility for contributing meaningfully towards improving patient care outcomes through evidence-based practices. These values form the foundation upon which their CME curriculum is built along with their commitment toward making positive changes at both state and federal levels that influence advancements within the specialty field.
