What does AAATP mean in UNCLASSIFIED

Americans Against Air Traffic Privatization (AAATP) is a non-profit organization that opposes the privatization of air traffic control operations in the United States. The group seeks to educate the public and policymakers about potential consequences of privatizing air traffic operations, which could negatively impact airline safety, service levels and consumer costs.

Privatizing air traffic control operations could lead to a decrease in airline safety, reduced service levels for passengers and increased costs for consumers. Additionally, it could cause a disruption in service due to an inadequate transition period, unanticipated operational changes or a lack of federal oversight.

AAATP believes that the current system of federal oversight ensures reliable and safe air transportation for travelers. The organization believes that there are more cost-effective ways to modernize our nation's air-traffic infrastructure than by outsourcing the services to private companies who may not have the expertise or experience necessary.

AAATP consists of pilots, flight attendants, aviation professionals, labor organizations and other individuals who are opposed to privatization. Members have come together with a shared goal of preserving our nation's safe and reliable air transportation system.

The organization was established in 2016 when concerns were raised about proposals from Congress to move towards full privatization of our nationʼs air navigation system without proper debate or understanding from members of Congress as well as members of the public.

Since its inception, AAATP has been actively advocating against overhauling our current system by speaking directly with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and providing insightful information on why this approach could result in disastrous implications for our nation's travelers. Through their efforts, they have been able to influence legislation such as “The Aviation Innovation Reform and Reauthorization Act” which was passed in 2018.

Private ownership does not necessarily guarantee efficient operation nor does it ensure optimal performance given how complex modern aviation systems are compared with other industries where some degree of regulation is often beneficial for all stakeholders involved.
