Meaning & Overview

Auditory Cognitive Neuroscience Society (ACNS) is an international organization made up of researchers from diverse disciplines focused on integrating knowledge from different subject areas such as psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, psychoacoustics, engineering, physiology and anatomy. The society’s mission is to promote research into the neural basis of higher cognitive functions related to audition with particular emphasis on understanding speech processing mechanisms in both normal-hearing listeners as well as those with hearing impairments or cochlear implants. Through collaborations between scientists from different backgrounds with diverse interests in auditory cognition research — including but not limited to speech perception — ACNS plays a leading role in fostering interdisciplinary sharing between disciplines.

Working

The primary goal of ACNS is to produce cutting-edge research that contributes new knowledge in understanding how we process acoustic information for communication purposes at multiple levels – turning sounds into words we recognize and comprehend; combining phonemes into meaningful words; recognizing words spoken by different speakers in noisy environments; distinguishing voices from background noise; detecting cues in auditory scenes that indicate emotional states or intentions; and more complex audiological tasks for which little or no research has been conducted yet. To achieve its mission, ACNS organizes member meetings at major international conferences like ARO (Association for Research in Otolaryngology), ICA (International Congress on Acoustics) and ISAAR (International Symposium on Auditory & Acoustic Research). Additionally it offers opportunities for networking through its mailing listservs where members can discuss topics of interest related to auditory cognitition or post job announcements or internship opportunities related to this fields. Moreover it promotes training opportunities through its workshops series allowing early career scientists like graduate students and postdocs gain skills needed for successful careers as independent researchers working in this exciting field. Finally ACNS promotes outreach activities by advocating better scientific communication practices among its members by supporting symposia at international meetings about current topics relevant to the society's mission such as technology transfer initiatives between academia and industry that will help bridge existing gaps between basic science discoveries and real world applications such as bionic devices for hearing rehabilitation.
