A Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) is a healthcare professional who has obtained additional credentials in order to provide childbirth and prenatal care, including gynecological and obstetric care. CNMs have the necessary training and qualifications to deliver babies, prescribe for routine obstetrical or gynecological needs, order lab work and imaging, as well as manage normal pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum care.

In order to become a certified nurse midwife you must first hold an unencumbered RN license plus have graduated from an accredited nurse-midwifery education program that was approved by accreditation commission for midwifery education (ACME). After graduating from such program you may apply for national certification examination offered by American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). Passing this exam will grant you credential called “Certified Nurse Midwife”(CNM). You can then renew your credential every 5 years by completing continuing education credits if required in your area.
