What does CG mean in BRITISH MEDICINE

Cholesterol granuloma (CG) is an inflammatory process of the temporal bone that generally follows a traumatic event such as prolonged ventilation with a tracheostomy tube. CG results in the accumulation of cholesterol crystals within granulation tissue, leading to the formation of an encapsulated mass within the mastoid air cells.

Cholesterol granuloma is usually caused by trauma due to prolonged ventilation with a tracheostomy tube. This trauma can cause injury to mucosal lining and allow cholesterols and other materials to enter into soft tissue surrounding the mastoid region.

Cholesterol granulomas are typically diagnosed using imaging techniques such as CT scans or MRI scans. These imaging techniques allow doctors to assess for any masses, abnormalities, or fluid accumulations in and around your ear.

Common symptoms associated with cholesterol granulomas include pain and discomfort in and around your ear, hearing loss, dizziness or vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in your ears), discharge from your ear and facial nerve numbness or paralysis.

The treatment for cholesterol granulomas depends on how severe the condition is. Often times conservative management will be sufficient including antibiotics if there's evidence of infection or steroids if there's evidence of inflammation However, more severe cases may require surgical intervention which may involve drainage of these masses or removal via surgical excision depending on location and severity.
