What does ACMD mean in PRESCRIPTION

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) is an independent body in the United Kingdom that advises government ministers on drug-related issues and strategies. The ACMD works to ensure that government policy and legislation related to drugs are based upon up-to-date evidence, received from a wide range of sources including academia, civil society organisations, public health bodies, professional groups and law enforcement agencies.

The ACMD operates through its subcommittees which meet regularly to provide expert advice on a wide range of matters such as the misuse of drugs, drug legislation and strategy. These committees comprise expert members from across a range of subject areas linked to drug misuse such as health professionals, police officers and social scientists. The advice provided by these committees is then passed onto relevant governmental departments for consideration when developing policies or legislation.

The members of ACMD are recruited via open competition and come from a variety of backgrounds including health experts, law enforcement practitioners, researchers, economists and clinicians. There are currently 63 members representing some 25 different professions/organisations across UK Government departments including Health & Social Care, Education & Home Affairs. Members usually serve for two years before needing to be re-appointed after which their terms can be extended subject to approval from the Department for Health & Social Care.

You can become involved with the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs by applying for membership as an expert advisor within one its many committees or by attending one of its public meetings or consultations which take place periodically throughout the year. Additionally you may also apply to become a member as part of an external consultation process organised by ACMD as well providing expertise or experience within your area or profession relating to drug misuse issues.

The primary source of funding for the work undertaken by ACMD is provided directly by UK Government departments including Health & Social Care, Education & Home Affairs as well as indirectly via additional partners who help fund specific projects or initiatives relating to substance misuse issues. All funding received is managed in accordance with strict financial regulations set out under government legislation.

The research undertaken byACMD varies in both scope and focus but includes extensive primary research into current trends in substance use amongst general populations across England Ireland Scotland Wales Northern Ireland; examining existing data sets relating to misuse patterns; monitoring new substances each year; conducting comprehensive analyses related to their implications; consulting broadly with stakeholders working across criminal justice social care education services provision prevention programmes etc.; engaging with communities at risk especially young people providing harm reduction advice/guidance etc.and ultimately advising government departments/agencies on best practice evidence based drug policy solutions.
