What does CEED mean in ENGINEERING

The Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity (CEED) seeks to provide access, education, and opportunity for students from underrepresented communities. Our mission is to attract, enroll, retain, and graduate diverse engineering students by developing a supportive learning environment that provides social-emotional support, academic success strategies, career exploration and mentoring opportunities.

CEED works to promote diversity among emerging engineers through a variety of initiatives that aim to support students from underrepresented communities. This includes providing access to financial aid resources, developing college prep programs for high school students and creating mentorship opportunities for young engineers. Additionally, our goal is to encourage collaboration between industry professionals and educational institutions to create a more diverse pipeline of talent for the engineering field.

The majority of our programs are open to any student enrolled in an engineering or related degree program who belongs to an underrepresented group (including but not limited to African American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American/Alaskan Natives). However eligibility criteria varies depending on the specific program.

Our organization offers several scholarships each year that are open specifically to students from underrepresented communities in the engineering field who possess demonstrated financial need or exceptional academic achievement. Absolutely! We offer research fellowships designed specifically for students from underrepresented communities interested in pursuing advanced study in engineering fields such as materials sciences, robotics and nanotechnology. Fellows will have access to mentors with expertise in their chosen field as well as state-of-the-art facilities located across the country including UC Berkeley's Lawrence Berkeley National Labratory.

Yes! As part of our mission we host a range of events throughout the academic year that seek to promote diversity through networking sessions with peers and industry representatives as well as specialized workshops highlighting different aspects of the engineering industry such as leadership development.

Yes we partner with a wide range of organizations both within academia and industry including universities across California such as UC Berkeley, Stanford University and San Jose State University; government agencies such as NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; grassroots initiatives such as DIY Girls; tech giants like Google; large corporations like Intel; startups like SpaceX; nonprofits like Minority Scholars Unlimited Inc.; professional associations like National Society of Black Engineers; plus so many more!
