CDSE was first started in 1950 when it was known as All India Services Examination and later renamed as Combined Services Examinations in 1940s. In 1955, CDSE began to include questions on current affairs as well. Later, UPSC introduced various changes in the exam pattern such as optional subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Geology & Mathematics throughout the years until 1998 when it included General Knowledge paper. In 2004, objective type question pattern was introduced along with negative marking for incorrect answers.
