Beverley Marian McLachlin is the first female Chief Justice of Canada, serving from 2000 to 2017. She was the 17th Chief Justice and the first woman to hold the position.

Beverley Marian McLachlin was born on September 7, 1943, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada.

Beverley Marian McLachlin received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and history from the University of Alberta in 1965, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta in 1968, and a Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge in 1969.

Before becoming Chief Justice, Beverley Marian McLachlin practiced law in Vancouver, British Columbia. She was a partner in the firm of McLachlin and Company and served as a member of the board of directors of several Canadian corporations. She was also a law professor at the University of British Columbia.

During her tenure as Chief Justice, Beverley Marian McLachlin oversaw several landmark cases, including the same-sex marriage case of Vriend v. Alberta. She also established the Supreme Court of Canada's Research and Information Office and the Court's Education Outreach Program.

After retiring as Chief Justice, Beverley Marian McLachlin was appointed to the International Court of Justice in 2018. She is currently a judge on the court and is also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
