What does NSBES mean in UNCLASSIFIED
The Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study (NSBES) is a collaborative research study between medical researchers and gastroenterologists designed to investigate the prevalence, incidence, natural history and outcomes of Barrett's Esophagus in Nova Scotia. It is one of the first studies of its kind in the region and provides valuable insight into the impact of this condition on those affected by it. The goal of the study is to provide a better understanding of how Barrett's Esophagus develops, how it progresses over time, and what treatments are most effective in managing its associated symptoms.

Study Details
The NSBES is an ongoing prospective epidemiological study which began in June 2012 as part of a four-year program funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research. The primary objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and incidence rates of Barrett's esophagus in Nova Scotia, taking into account various demographic factors such as age, gender, obesity status, smoking history etc. In addition to collecting data from patients who have been diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus or dysplasia related to it, researchers will also be recruiting relevant controls from local endoscopy clinics. Over 4500 individuals are expected to be recruited into the study and followed up annually over a five year period. However at any given time, only around 500-600 participants will be actively enrolled.
Data Collection
Data collection procedures involve gathering information on demographics/risk factors (age, gender, race etc.), medical history (disease activities that could increase risk), lifestyle-related risk factors (alcohol consumption/smoking etc.), dietetic habits (frequency/type/amount) digestion related symptoms (gastroesophageal reflux disease -GERD- presence or absence), medication use (type/frequency), laboratory results and other items identified during data collection visits. All collected data will then be analyzed using statistical methods to determine prevalence and incidence rate estimates for Barrett's esophagus which can be used as baseline values for further studies on this condition.
Essential Questions and Answers on Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study in "MISCELLANEOUS»UNFILED"
What is the Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study?
The Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study is a research project that focuses on understanding the causes, progression, and treatment of Barrett's esophagus. This condition affects people who suffer from GERD and can lead to cancer of the esophagus. The study involves both clinical research and basic science to address these issues.
Why is the Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study important?
The Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study is an important part of improving our understanding of this condition and its associated risks. It will help us better understand how to diagnose and treat it more effectively in order to reduce risk factors and improve outcomes for those affected by it.
Who is conducting the Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study?
The study is being conducted by a team of researchers from Dalhousie University, University of Toronto, St. John's Medical College, as well as other hospital-based departments across Canada.
What kind of data will be collected during the Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study?
During this study, we will collect information about participants' medical histories, lifestyle factors, genetic material and environmental exposures that may be contributing to their risk for developing this condition. This data will provide insight into who is at risk for developing Barrett's esophagus and how environmental or lifestyle factors may influence a person's chances of developing it.
How do I sign up for the Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study?
You can visit our website (www.barrettesstudy.ca) or contact us directly at [email protected] if you're interested in participating in the study. We ask that prospective participants fill out an online questionnaire so we can get an idea of your medical history and determine if you would be eligible to join our research project.
How often do I need to visit my doctor if I participate in the Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study?
Participation in the study requires regular visits with our team throughout its duration (usually every 6 months). During these visits we will assess your health status, gather additional data related to your health history/risk factors, answer any questions you may have related to your participation in the project and provide any necessary guidance or advice.
Is there any cost associated with participating in the Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study?
There are no direct costs associated with participating in this study. All necessary medications related to participation are provided free-of-charge by our team.
What happens after I participate in the Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study?
Participants who complete their involvement in the study will receive a summary report outlining their findings along with additional resources regarding diet changes, lifestyle modifications and treatments that may help them manage any symptoms they are experiencing.
Are there any risks involved while participating in the Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study?
Our research team places safety as our top priority; therefore all possible precautions are taken when administering any procedures related to our study such as endoscopy or biopsies which could cause minor discomfort or minor bleeding/infection at injection sites.
: Will my personal data remain confidential during my involvement withthe Nova Scotia Barrett Esophagus Study?
Yes! Your personal data is always kept secured under strict regulations outlined by Health Canada and undergoes stringent controls with respect to its maintenance, use, disclosure and retention.
Final Words:
The NSBES is an important research endeavor that aims to provide critical evidence surrounding the prevalence, incidence and natural history of Barrett's esophagus in Nova Scotia populations — something that has never been documented before. With its potential impact on future clinical approaches towards managing this condition and other digestive diseases associated with GERD it has significant public health implications as well as possible economic gains by preventing complications associated with advanced stages of Barrett's esophagus cases later down the line.
