What does CBR mean in REHABILITATION

Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) is an approach to rehabilitation that strives to empower individuals with disabilities and their families. It seeks to reduce the stigmas associated with disabilities and facilitate meaningful inclusion by providing an interdisciplinary suite of services like health care, education, and employment support.

Individuals with physical, mental, or social disability as well as their families can benefit from CBR. This includes those who are poor or are living in rural areas who may not have access to adequate services without this type of intervention.

CBR efforts focus on a holistic approach relevant to the local context with particular attention given to the most excluded populations such as persons living in poverty or rural settings. The process works by bringing together different sectors within the community i.e., government agencies, civil society organizations, private entities etc., in order to identify gaps in service provision for people living with disabilities and then implementing plans that address those needs.

CBR typically involves a variety of activities in order for individuals with disabilities or their families gain better access to services essential for their development including healthcare, education, training opportunities, legal protection and other forms of support or assistance needed for their wellbeing. Additionally it also seeks out measures which prevent discrimination against those living with disabilities.

Since its inception more than three decades ago CBR has become a widely accepted practice benefitting numerous lives around the world through providing greater access services and support specifically tailored towards vulnerable populations. These include enabling greater recognition of disability rights among stakeholders involved as well as pushing policy changes that enable more inclusion among various social structures at national level.
