What does CBID mean in BIOLOGY

The Center for Biologically Inspired Design (CBID) is an interdisciplinary research center at Georgia Tech that seeks to use nature as a source of inspiration for developing technological solutions to real-world problems. CBID researchers draw from aspects of biology such as biomechanics, neural networks, and evolutionary algorithms to develop innovative new technologies that surpass traditional engineering approaches.

The research conducted by CBID covers a wide range of topics related to biologically inspired design. Areas of focus include energy systems, robotics, artificial intelligence, materials science, prosthetics and wearable technology, autonomous systems and biomedical applications.

Students with an interest in any of the areas above are welcome to join one of our many ongoing projects. We offer both undergraduate and graduate opportunities in which students can gain valuable hands-on experience in biologically inspired design. Currently we do not offer degree programs; however, we do have a broad range of courses and independent study options available through Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering.

Here at CBID we have strong partnerships with national and international universities related to biomimetic research including MIT, Northwestern University, Columbia University, TU Berlin and the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. Additionally, we collaborate closely with numerous industry partners such as Google AI Lab, Microsoft Research Lab and Apple Worldwide AI & Robotics team amongst many others.

Yes! We are dedicated to nurturing interaction between faculty members who share an understanding or interest in the subject matter. This includes providing support for conference attendance/hosting costs if you hold an appointment here at Georgia Tech.

Yes! In addition to our multi-disciplinary approach to research projects led by faculty members or staff scientists,we support a large number of undergraduate and graduate student initiatives through our various funding sources such as grants from federal agencies. Here at CBID we provide access to high-end computing resources such as servers, desktop computers and cloud storage.In addition, some labs within the center have specialized equipment such as 3D printers, soldering stations, drones etc...
