Who are The Cape Breton Highlanders?

The CBH is a reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian army that has its headquarters located in Sydney, Nova Scotia on Canada’s east coast. It belongs to 36 Canadian Brigade Group of 4th Canadian Division and serves to protect not only Cape Breton but also the entirety of Canada's Atlantic coast.

The CBH have had an active history since their establishment in 1871, including two world wars as well as military deployments near Cyprus and Syria. Additionally, they provided assistance for disaster relief during Hurricane Juan in 2003.

The Highlanders include three battalions and support elements that make up their team - 2nd Battalion of ‘A’ Company, 12th Battalion of ‘B’ Company, 35th Field Engineer Squadron from 5 Engineering Support Regiment (5 CER), 602 Communications Squadron from 24 Air Movements Squadron (24 EMS), 27 Unit Supply Detachment from 7 Supply Support Regiment (7 SSR), 116 Light Anti-Aircraft Battery attached from 13th Field Artillery Regiment (13FAR), 620 Tactical Helicopter Squadron from 9 Air Command (9 AC), 48 Tactical Helicopter Squadron to 24th Air Movement Squadron (24 AMS). Each of these battalions and squadrons work together to form a cohesive unit with different roles assigned to each member under the command of one overall leader.

What Are They Doing Now?

In present times, the CBH continues to serve as part of the Canadian Forces reserves stationed at 19 Wing Comox on Vancouver Island in British Columbia and 3 Wing Bagotville Quebec. They provide training exercises throughout Atlantic Canada with personnel being regularly rotated between Units while providing emergency services such as responding to forest fires or medical evacuations if called upon by federal or provincial government organizations. The force also participates annually in multiple international military training exercises overseen by NORAD across North America, Europe (Baltic States & Belgium) as well as Jamaica. As part of their continuing commitment towards Canada’s mission abroad, members have recently deployed on peacekeeping operations with NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum located in Geilenkirchen Germany & contribute vital humanitarian aid to Natural Disaster Relief efforts when needed throughout Canada`s Arctic regions & territories.

They also participate annually in professional development exercise for their officers called “Code Of Conduct Courses” where troops learn essential life skills such as critical thinking & problem solving along with more specialized fields such as first aid & advanced weapons handling tactics from experienced instructors certified by National Defence Headquarters Ottawa Ontario. Furthermore, cadets can join Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program within schools across Atlantic Canada so young people can familiarize themselves with military settings under guidance from adult officers who serve within The Highlanders.
