The Zambia Democratic Congress was founded in 2016, by then presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema and other opposition leaders as an alternative political platform to the long-dominant Patriotic Front. In 2021, the ZDC experienced its first major electoral success when it won two parliamentary seats in Mbabala constituency with over 80% of the vote.
