A Knowledge Engineer uses specialized computer programming tools and techniques to create expert systems, which are designed to enable humans to interact with the system through answering questions and providing advice.

Expert systems are designed to be able to simulate human behavior by utilizing a database of facts and rules-based information stored in the computer's memory. The system can then process these facts and rules to generate an output or decision that would be similar to what a human expert would provide.

A Knowledge Engineer must have technical skills, such as software development, database management, artificial intelligence algorithms, machine learning algorithms, etc. They must also have excellent problem solving skills as well as an understanding of how people think and act in order to create effective interactions between humans and computers.

While both professions involve writing code for computers, the approach taken for each profession is different. Software Developers focus mainly on creating applications that users can interact with using graphical interfaces. On the other hand, Knowledge Engineers focus on developing expert systems which simulate human behavior using data-driven methods.

Communication is essential when developing any type of software because it allows one team member's ideas and coding logic to be understood by others on the team. With regard to developing successful expert systems specifically, communication plays an especially crucial role since it helps ensure consistency in terms of how the AI behaves throughout the entire project life cycle.
