History

The Central Autónoma de Trabajadores del Perú (CATP) was established in 1944 as a result of several major strikes by Peruvian workers in response to terrible working conditions under dictator Manuel Odría’s rule. Led by academics, intellectuals and members of the working class from all over Peru - mostly from Lima - it became an organization dedicated to the defense of labor rights against foreign businesses who had significant control over Peruvian employment markets. This early period saw campaigns for better wages and improved worker safety standards which laid down much of CATP’s foundational principles when it officially became a trade union in 1952. Throughout its history CATP has had numerous successes having been involved in numerous protests against unfair labor practices all over Peru including mining strikes which saw massive support from other unions such as Confederacion General de Trabajadores (CGTP). As one of the keystone organizations within the Latin American Trade Union movement it has consistently called out national governments whose policies have undercut workers rights. In addition to this it maintains links with international federations such as International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) helping create global collaborations which improve working conditions worldwide.

Impact

Today CATP remains a leader amongst Latin American worker's rights movements having started countless labor battles across the country. It serves as one example which reminds us that the status quo is not always immutable; while progress can be hard fought for it is achievable through collective action. Moreover CATP continues to play a crucial role in advising local governments on creating fair worker policies which balance employer interests whilst still protecting people’s right to work without fear or exploitation whilst valuing human dignity above all else. As such they act as a beacon for other unions around the world seeking similar reforms within their own nations.
