What is CASPER?

What type of research does CASPER do?

CASPER conducts research that ranges from computer architecture and electromagnetics, to embedded systems and digital signal processing. The team works to design, build, and deploy custom astronomical instrumentation to enable the next generation of concepts at many wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum.

How long has CASPER been around?

CASPER was founded in 2002 by Professor Andrew Siemion at the University of California Berkeley. It has since grown into a multidisciplinary collaboration involving over 70 researchers from 8 countries and many academic institutions worldwide.

Does anyone outside of academia participate in CASPER?

Absolutely! In addition to universities and other academic institutions, members of industry, government agencies, amateur astronomers, and civil society organizations have all contributed to the success of the project.
