What does CARI mean in RESEARCH

The Collaborative Arts Research Initiative (CARI) is a program designed to support research projects in the areas of art, music, literature, photography and architecture. CARI brings together creative artists, scholars and organizations to foster collaboration through research and development of innovative arts-based solutions. The initiative was launched by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2019 in order to promote artistic excellence and build public knowledge about the power of art.

Eligibility for CARI funding is available to qualified individuals who are not currently grant recipients from other Federal agencies, as well as domestic institutions of higher education; non-profit organizations; government agencies; Native American tribes; state and local governmental entities; nonprofit publishing companies; literary magazines; historical societies; etc. Applicants must be 18 years or older with permanent legal residence in the United States.

Awards range from $10,000-$50,000 per awardee depending on the scope of proposal. All funds may be used for personnel salaries/fringes & travel expenses related directly to proposed activities only; no direct costs such as supplies/equipment can be covered by these awards.

Projects should include a strong collaboration between two or more participants throughout its duration. Potential topics could include but are not limited to cultural heritage preservation/restoration projects involving musicology/ethnomusicology practices or curatorial studies involving visual arts or architecture.
