What does ACLS mean in SURGICAL

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Surgery (ACLS) is a surgical procedure used to repair or reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament, which is a major ligament in the knee. It helps stabilize the knee joint and restore movement and function in the leg.

ACLS may be necessary if an individual has torn their anterior cruciate ligament from trauma or overuse injuries such as sports-related activities. It can also be used to reconstruct an ACL that has become stretched or weakened due to arthritis.

If your physician determines that you need surgery to alleviate pain caused by your injury, they may suggest ACLS as an option for treatment. Your doctor will help you decide if it's the right choice for you based on your specific circumstances.

During ACLS, a surgeon will make an incision near your knee and repair or reconstruct your anterior cruciate ligament with either tissue from another part of your body (such as from a hamstring tendon) or donor tissue. The surgeon may also need to remove any damaged tissue surrounding the area before repairing/reconstructing it. Depending on several factors, including severity of injury, recovery time after surgery can take anywhere from three months up to one year.

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks associated with ACLS such as infection, nerve damage, residual pain/stiffness in the joint, swelling/bruising and even blood clots. In addition, there's always a chance that reconstruction won't be successful even after ACSL has been completed. Taking steps before surgery like building strength through physical therapy or rest can help minimize some of these risks.
