What does PIPE mean in PREVENTION

Partners in Prevention Education (PIPE) is a national initiative to provide education and resources for individuals about preventing dating violence, sexual assault and domestic violence. PIPE works to bring community awareness of these issues through education, research, public policy initiatives, and public engagement. PIPE strives to create an environment where individuals can safely report warning signs and seek support when needed.

PIPE offers a variety of educational resources for educators, parents, students and community members which includes workshops, online trainings, bystander intervention programs, webinars, fact sheets and other informational materials. Additionally, PIPE provides access to regional experts and local organizations that specialize in prevention activities related to dating violence and sexual assault.

While some activities may have age limitations due to the subject matter being discussed or legal requirements of the activity itself, most of our educational programming is open to anyone 16 years or older unless otherwise noted by program staff or event sponsors.

Dating violence is defined as physical hurt or psychological harm inflicted upon an individual with whom the abuser has been romantically involved with or has had a romantic relationship with. The forms of violence can include physical assaults such as hitting, pushing, shoving; emotional abuse like name calling or insults; threats; intimidation; stalking; destruction of property; use of technology like cyberbullying or cyberharassment; as well as forced sexual activity including rape or attempted rape.

If you or someone you know is experiencing dating violence it is important to reach out for help from family members, friends, school counselors/administrators/staff members or healthcare providers if appropriate. In addition there are many nationally recognized 24-hour crisis hotlines specifically focused on providing assistance for those who are survivors of abuse.
