History
Ipswich first appeared in the Football League Second Division back in 1938 following a successful campaign in non-league competitions. After two promotions, they eventually reached the top flight for the first time in 1961, where they remained for 11 seasons until they were relegated again to Division Two 10 years later. Since then, ITFC have had varying degrees of success but have been fairly consistent members of England's second tier – last competing there during the 2018–19 season before their relegation to League One.
Achievements
In 1978–79 ITFC won their only major trophy when they lifted the FA Cup after beating Arsenal 1–0 at Wembley Stadium. On that same season they also finished third place in the First Division (now known as Premier League), making it their highest finish since entering the league system all those years ago. The Tractor Boys have also had success on continental soil when they won both legs of their UEFA Cup tie against AZ '67 Alkmaar back in 1981, which was then known as an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup semi-final first round match-up.
Current Status
Ipswich Town are currently managed by Paul Lambert who took over from Mick McCarthy at the start of 2018. At present, ITFC compete in League One after being relegated from Championship last season finishing 24th with 52 points – four adrift from safety – but hope to make a swift return to Championship under Lambert’s management this coming season.
