What does APT mean in PREVENTION

Alzheimer Prevention Trials (APT) is a clinical trial network that provides an opportunity for individuals with a family history of Alzheimer's to join research studies to help develop new treatments and prevention strategies. APT was created to produce evidence-based guidance and treatments that can be utilized in the prevention of, delay onset, or slow progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Individuals who have a family history of Alzheimer’s disease, but do not yet have symptoms themselves, are potentially eligible for participation in Alzheimer Prevention Trials. Participants must meet certain criteria specific to the individual study.

Interested individuals can search for a study through the APT website or by contacting their nearest participating Clinical Site. Upon finding a study they wish to participate in, they will need to provide basic contact information in order to receive additional information from the site coordinator about the specifics of the study itself and eligibility criteria.

Each research study varies depending on its focus; however participants may be asked to provide medical history, complete questionnaires, or undergo physical exams at designated APT sites. Some studies require additional testing such as cognitive assessments or MRIs. Incentives may also be provided for completing assigned tasks associated with each study.

Study duration requirements vary depending on the type of study being conducted and its goals; however most studies typically require between one month and one year of total participation time after initial enrollment into the respective program.

Costs vary across studies but generally participants are not responsible for fees associated with routine tests such as cognitive assessments or regular blood work performed during clinical visits. Depending on the particularities of each study there may be additional costs for which participants are responsible.

While risks will vary across different studies depending on procedures used during execution of those studies; however all risks involved will be disclosed prior to participant enrollment and consent will not be obtained until questions surrounding safety concerns have been fully addressed by all parties concerned.
