History

The AAACC was established in 1989 by Reginald Wilkins, a nationally renowned sculptor and community activist. Wilkins wanted to create a safe space that celebrated African American heritage and promoted art from African American artists. In the early years of the AAACC, its programming featured mostly black folk arts such as quilting, gospel singing, storytelling sessions, step shows, spoken word events, and blues concerts. As time progressed so did their programming which eventually included performing arts classes for children as well as exhibitions featuring black visual artists from all over the country.

Programs & Services

The AAACC offers several programs and services for people of all ages and backgrounds. For youth they offer after school classes ranging from dance to hip hop music production to theater production which are taught by professional instructors. They also offer free public events such as Saturday morning open houses with hands-on activities like building instruments or live performances from local musicians or troupes like Bay Area Children’s Theater or Bayview Opera House Musical Theatre Company. Additionally, they host film screenings with discussion afterwards and presentations about contemporary issues facing African Americans today such as gentrification or immigration policies. Finally they offer gallery exhibitions that feature regional talent along with works from world-renowned African American artists from throughout the US including Jacob Lawrence Collection and Romare Bearden Collection (both part of our permanent collection).
