The COAD was founded in 1948 as a part of the then newly established University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Initially it was housed on three floors in Rozelle Hall –the old boys’ school connected to St Phillips Church. This period marked a new era for architectural education in Australia, and the college quickly became one of the most prominent schools of architecture on the continent. In 1975, due to its growing success and student numbers, it moved to a dedicated purpose-built building located at Harris Street Ultimo Campus with some modifications completed within two years. In 1992 UTAS' first graduate program was introduced at COAD under the name Master of Architecture (Professional). Since then several other postgraduate programs have been added including Master of Building Science & Technology (2009) and Master of Landscape Architecture (2012). The college continues to develop new programs consistently depending on current needs while also offering professional development courses for practicing architects.
