What does HMT mean in OPTOMETRY

An HMT typically provides services such as haircuts, styling, coloring, trims, perms, relaxers, texturizing treatments and scalp treatments. In addition to hair services, they can also provide medical assistance with things like blood draws, ECGs, wound care and injections.

You can find a qualified HMT at a salon or spa that offers hair or medical related services. Alternatively you may also be able to book an appointment with an individual technician if they work independently.

Most states require that Hair Technicians have at least a high school diploma or equivalent along with completing state-approved barbering or cosmetologist programs before being allowed to practice professionally. Additionally many states require additional continuing education courses for license renewal. Medical Technicians may require additional certification depending on the state in which they practice but generally will have had some form of medical training prior to obtaining their license.
