What Are RHECs?

RHECs are specialized endothelial cells that line the interior walls of the heart’s chambers and atrioventricular valves. They are amongst the smallest blood vessels within the human body, where they regulate blood flow through their ability to constrict or dilate depending on factors such as oxygen levels and local hormones or neurotransmitters. Because of their small size, they form a barrier between circulating blood and cardiac muscle tissue which helps maintain a consistent flow rate regardless of fluctuations in arterial pressure. Furthermore, they can also help protect cardiac tissue from damage by extreme pressures or chamber enlargement during certain heart conditions such as hypertension or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

How Do RHECs Work?

RHECs act like a gatekeeper between our organs and vessels by regulating blood flow through changing their shape based on various signals from surrounding tissues such as oxygen tension levels or local hormones or neurotransmitters released from nearby cells. This allows them to contract or relax based on these signals which subsequently controls arterial pressure levels throughout the body.
