What does HAB mean in HOUSING & AMENITIES

The Housing Advisory Board works to ensure safe and affordable housing for all communities. They advocate for fair housing practices and promote the development of affordable housing in order to create an equitable environment.

Membership in the Housing Advisory Board is open to all people who are committed to creating more equitable access to safe, affordable, and quality housing. Members are also expected to participate in meetings, workshops, events, and other activities as needed.

The Housing Advisory Board defines “affordable” housing as units that are priced at or near 30% of a household's income based on area median income levels. Additionally, they strive to provide adequate support services so that people living in this type of housing have access to resources such as job training programs or social services.

HAB has formed partnerships with numerous organizations and agencies such as local governments, community-based organizations, lenders, developers, tenant associations, real estate brokers, property managers, landlords, homeowners insurance companies and more. Through these partnerships they are able to offer a variety of services including policy advice & advocacy; technical assistance; research & reports; funding guidance; outreach & education; and direct services such as finding rental assistance or eviction prevention resources. This allows them to bring together multiple stakeholders which ultimately helps further their mission of increasing access to safe and affordable housing across the country.

No prior experience working in affordable housing is necessary prior to joining HAB — knowledge about specific issues related to affordable housing is beneficial but not required as members will complete training upon joining the organization.
